FREE LUNCH

Jean-Kenta Gauthier | Vaugirard

December 5, 2020 - May 29, 2021

Dear all,

The seven participating artists and I invite you to FREE LUNCH, an exhibition of works that are entirely offered to you, for free. This exhibition is held from December 5, 2020 to May 29, 2021 in the new gallery space at 4, rue de la Procession, in the 15th arrondissement.

According to Milton Friedman, "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch". In other words, a free meal is an illusion as the recipient always ends up paying a price. But an illusion does not preclude dreaming and from intention to fulfillment, it takes commitment.

FREE LUNCH, originally scheduled for our booth at Paris Photo 2020, presents a collection of works which all question the generation, circulation and politics of images today, and for which being free of charge, being given, is a very consequence of their nature. FREE LUNCH now becomes the opening exhibition of our new gallery and it is for me, especially in 2020, a manifest symbol.

You are thus, all of you, in compliance with current measures, invited to our FREE LUNCH. The opening will take place on Saturday, December 5 from 12 am to 7 pm in order to allow everyone the time to discover, live, and take with you the works of Daniel Blaufuks (Perpetual Camera, 2020; Original Copy, 2020; blaufuks_daily, 2020 - ongoing), Coco Capitán (Memory Adoption Bureau, 2020), Raphaël Dallaporta (Volatility Index, 2020, in collaboration with Thomas Kerdreux and Louis Thiry), Mishka Henner (The Fertile Image, 2020, which will be re-installed each week), David Horvitz (How to Exit a Photograph, 2008; 20th Century Alienation, 2020), Alfredo Jaar (You do not take a photograph. You make it., 2013) and Julien Nédélec (The Moon belongs to everyone, 2020).

During FREE LUNCH:
- Alfredo Jaar's work entitled You do not take a photograph. You make it. (2013), presented at the gallery, is also exhibited at MEP from May 19, and offered to their visitors.

I would like to warmly thank the artists as well as our friends for their invaluable support: Simon Baker, Brice Garçon, David Knaus, Hailey Widrig and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Paris.

I dedicate this FREE LUNCH to Bruno Kladar, a wonderful artist who passed away this summer and whose work was already heavenly food.

See you soon to share our FREE LUNCH,

Jean-Kenta Gauthier
